How to Tell if Expat Life is For You

11 Aug

As an expat and expat coach, Margarita Gokun Silver poses her answer to the question “When you were first offered an expat position, how did you know it was for you? How did you know that you’d be happy living away from home in another country and another culture?”

It’s a question that is hard to pinpoint a clear answer to and she gives her opinion on how to know if you are suited for expat life here.

I love traveling and you should have an open mind when coming to another country.  For example, stores may be closed at hours you normally shop. There’s also a variety of cultural behavior and customs that you should be sensitive to such as having to remove your shoes upon entering a home in Japan.  I think the one of the keys to knowing whether being an expat is for you is knowing that you have the flexibility to deal with change.
